Dr. Johnny Zhou was invited to attend the 2nd Aramid Industry Tech & Application Development Summit

On May 24, 2024, Dr. Johnny Zhou was invited to attend "the 2nd Aramid Industry Technology and Application Development Summit" held in Jiading, Shanghai, China and made a keynote speech.

The theme of this summit was "Strengthening New Technologies and Expanding New Markets". During the summit, frontier communications were made regarding problems which urgently needed to be solved such as aramid technical problems, market supply stability and industrial development. Meanwhile, the summit promoted to build a communication platform for aramid production, study, research and investment and promoted the collaboration between industry and academia.

Associate Professor Yang Yanfei (Zhongyuan Institute of Technology )and Dr. Li Xuedong (Chief Scientist of Hunan Hengxing New Material Technology Co., Ltd.) served as the host of the morning/afternoon half of the summit respectively. Dr. Johnny Zhou (President of Beijing Protech New Material Science Co., Ltd.), Tuo Xinlin (Associate Professor of Tsinghua University) Dr. Peng Tao (Assistant General Manager of Zhonglan Chenguang Chemical Design and Research Institute, General Manager of Special Fiber Business Department, Associate Researcher of Donghua University) Sun Zeyu (Secretary-General of Automotive New Materials Branch of China Association of Automobile Manufacturers) and more than 200 leaders, experts, scholars, enterprises and representatives of the news media from enterprises, universities, research institutes and societies attended the summit.

Aramid ( Aromatic Polyamide Fiber) was one of the key materials to be developed for new strategic industires, together with carbon fiber and Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene fiber, which were known as three major high-tech fibers in the world. Aramid had high physical and chemical characteristics such as high impact resistance, high abradability, high resistance to chemical substances and high thermal degradation, etc.. It had broad application fields including aircrafts (aviation, aerospace and other industrial fields), new energy vehicles, optical communication cables, advanced composite materials, bulletproof products, protective clothes, sports shoes and clothing, sails, electronic equipment and so on. National policies and local governments actively encouraged the development and industrialization of para-aramid products.

Dr. Johnny Zhou made a keynote speech with the title of "Development Trend of Aramid Fiber in the Ballistic Field ". He introduced the characteristics and current situation of the main types of Aramid Fiber, the failure mode under ballistic penetration and the development trend in the ballistic field. Aramid fibers could significantly reduce deformation and decrease non-penetrating trauma injury after bullet impact. A variety of anti-deformation materials developed by Protech had passed the bulletproof tests and the BFS were significantly lower than other conventional materials, with a decrease by more than 13% and the utmost to 33%. Moreover, with excellent properties of temperature resistance, fire resistance and flame retardant, and perfect structural property and the advantages of hybridizing different fiber materials aramid fibers would play a greater role in helmets, heat-resistant armor, and vessel armor. In addition, Dr. Johnny Zhou evaluated positively the research of "New Progress in Heterocyclic Aramid/PBO High Performance and Application Technology Research" by Dr. Peng Tao of Zhonglan Chenguang and expected that Dr. Peng's team would make greater breakthroughs  improving the UV resistance and aging performance of PBO fibers.
